Move over Sutro Baths. This is the once grand Alexandria movie theater in the Richmond District. Opened in 1923. Its Egyptian motif is a hearty nod to the recently discovered, at the time, King Tutankhamen’s tomb. It's been closed for 15 years now, and slowly allowed to decay. Pigeons and homeless people share what protection its towering architecture offers from the elements. They've already built a 43-unit condo building behind the theater on what used to be its small parking lot. The plan floated for the theater itself was a small 221-seat theater, with several thousand square feet of retail and restaurant space claiming the lion's share of the new structure. Hasn't happened yet; meanwhile it grow slightly more ruinous by the day. Brief history here: https://www.sfheritage.org/positions-testimony/alexandria/
