This close-up detail of the totem pole in front of the Cliff House is enduring yet another fog-swept afternoon, fed by a wind-whipped marine layer coming off the Pacific. This teeth-baring grimace is then entirely appropriate. The totem pole, installed in the 1950's, was originally 60-feet tall, and claimed to be the tallest in the world -- carved from a single piece of cedar. It was installed on the north side of the Cliff House entrance. Today it sits just south of the entrance, and at a reduced height -- probably due to a winter storm. There's a good article at this url: https://www.artandarchitecture-sf.com/the-totem-pole-at-the-cliff-house.html
