This is Empire Park @ 642 Commercial Street, near the waterfront in San Francisco. Between 1860-1880 it featured the "Eureka Lodging & Boarding House." Also known as the royal residence of Joshua Norton, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. (He even printed his own money.) The emperor resided here from 1860-1880, his entire royal reign. It was a single room with barely enough space for a bed, and a couple nails in the wall to hang his regal coat. Everything in this part of town perished 25 years later in the earthquake and fire. Today it is one of the unexpected "pocket parks" that wait to be discovered in downtown San Francisco.
