Phyllis Hirschbaum: Pedestrian Trailblazer.

On May 27, 1937, Ms. Hirschbaum became the first person to pass through the pedestrian toll both to cross the new Golden Gate Bridge from the San Francisco side. That's right, there was originally a toll to walk across the bridge. (I believe it was 25-cents.) On the plus side, you had to walk your bike across the bridge. Anybody who's ever walked across the bridge knows dodging cyclists is a stressful part of the trip.
